Malibu Original White Rum is a coconut flavoured liqueur made with Caribbean rum. The product was created by Tom Jago of International Distilleries & Vintners and was originally made from fruit spirits, flavoured with rum and coconut in Curacao. The product was originally created with the idea of simplifying the making of Pina Colada by bartenders. The product took off and demand continued to increase, and the production was then moved to Barbados, where the rum is made by West Indie Rum Distillery Ltd. West Indie Rum Distillery Ltd is a renowned distillery founded in 1893 that produces Caribbean rum bases. The quality of the ingredients used also increased following the movement of the production facility.
Malibu brand was sold to Allied Domecq by Diageo for a considerable sum of eight hundred million USD in 2002. In 2005, French beverage company Pernod Richard purchased Allied Domecq for fourteen billion USD. This meant that all alcoholic beverages brands under Allied Domecq, including Malibu, was acquired and under the new owner.
