Havana Club is a brand of rum first created in Cuba in 1934. Originally produced in Cardenas, Cuba by family-owned Jose Arechabala S.A, the brand was nationalized after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. The Arechabala family founded the distillery in 1878 and started producing Havana Club in 1934. The company was nationalized without compensation by the Castro government in 1960 and the Arechabala family claims it was taken from them at gunpoint. Much of the Arechabala family was forced to leave Cuba for Spain and the United States, while other members of the family were imprisoned.

In 1993, French Company Pernod Richard and the government of Cuba created a state-run 50:50 joint venture called Havana Club International S.A. The newly founded Company exported this version of Havana Club globally except for the United States due to the embargo placed by the United States government.

Bacardi, another Cuban family that left Cuba during the Cuban Revolution also began producing Havana Club in 1994 after purchasing the original recipe from Arechabala family. This is a competing product made in Puerto Rico and sold in the United States. Bacardi and Pernod Richard have engaged in ongoing litigation about the ownership of the brand Havana Club.

Havana Club Rum is made from 100% locally sourced Cuban sugar cane and is aged for at least three years before bottling. Known for being a light aged white rum with green notes from the sugar cane and fruity notes of Caribbean rum.

Note: Our Bottling is by Pernod Richard and not Bacardi.
