Chivas Regal is brand of blended Scotch whisky produced by Chivas Brothers, which is now a part of Pernod Richard. The Brand was founded in 1786 and its home being Strathisla Distillery, is the oldest continuously operating Highland distillery located in Keith, Moray in Speyside, Scotland.
Chivas Regal originally started life with their first 25-year old to target the high societies in the United States. To compete with rivals, Chivas Regal offered a more sophisticated and complex palate by using higher malt content than many other blends of the time. Now, Chivas Brothers with tighter cask managements has added 12-year old and 18-year old into the core range with 12-year old being the flagship expression. The core range today has much lower malt content than its predecessors. James Chivas, the founder of the Brand first began setting up a grocery and wine store in Aberdeen in 1801. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that Chivas Regal’s legacy began when they held a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria.
The economies of the United States and Canada were booming during the 1900s and in 1909, Chivas Regal launched what came to be the world’s first luxury blended whisky, Chivas Regal 25-year old. Within the first year of launch, Chivas Regal became the most talked about imported consumer goods among the high society in the states. Chivas Brothers survived two world wars, the first was in 1914 when shipping routes to the US was cut and again in 1939. To preserve stocks, Chivas Regal relaunched again in the US with their flagship 12-year old. The mid-level expression, Chivas Regal 18-year old was introduced in 1997 to create a climb in the portfolio from 12-year old to 25-year old.
Chivas 12 Years is a blended Scotch whisky created by Master Blender Colin Scott with the majority of the blend being Speyside malts. Bottled at the standard 40% ABV.
